When Belinda Blokland realised she was pursuing a career she wasn’t passionate about, she pivoted towards a path that excited her. 

That choice led her to become our Financial Services Coordinator - and Values Champion nominee.

PIVOTING AND PROGRESSION

Belinda initially studied Hospitality Management in Brisbane - but her heart wasn’t in it.

“I thought back to what inspired me, and I quickly realised it was numbers. I immediately transferred into an accounting degree, and I haven’t looked back since.”

Belinda soon found herself packing her bags and switching bustling Brisbane City for a country lifestyle in Charters Towers.

“I met my husband at my first job after graduation. What started as a long-distance romance soon turned into twelve years, two beautiful kids, and a collection of happy memories. I love living here - I felt immediately at home.”

Today, Belinda is responsible for Council’s Financial Services team and the integrity of financial data. It’s a role she loves, albeit a far cry from where she started.

“I truly believe if you love what you do, you’ll be proud of what you’re achieving - and I adore my job. I love numbers and I get a real buzz out of supporting my team.”

Belinda’s passion and dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. In fact, she’s been nominated for all five of Council’s core values.

Belinda was surprised to be nominated as a Values Champion.

“I was lost for words. It gives me the confidence to keep moving forward and leading in a way that’s important to me. I’ve been known to overthink things, so this feels like a real pat on the back. And who doesn’t need a boost every now and then?”
