Charters Towers Regional Council prides itself on its commitment to promoting and facilitating greater access to our Region’s locations.

In recent years, the Charters Towers Region has been a popular set location for films and television series.  

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the interest in the Charters Towers Region has increased substantially and indications are that this is going to continue.  International production companies view Australia as a safe and desirable film and production location.

The Charters Towers Region boasts a fabulous selection of film-friendly locations – from urban centres to a wide range of rural landscapes.  Most recently Australian Survivor Series 7 Blood Vs Water was produced and filmed in its entirety in the Region.  In a joint effort, Charters Towers locals and global television and digital production powerhouse Endemol Shine Australia joined together to create what can only be described as a superior setting presented to a global audience.

Council understands the latitude that the film industry requires to make its magic, and in order to ensure your production and filming experience in Region is a seamless process, Council has an experienced and dedicated Film and Production Concierge Team.

Film Locations

The Charters Towers Region boasts a fabulous selection of film-friendly locations.  With an area spanning over 68,000 km², making us as big Tasmania, we are proud to present you with such a diverse platter.  If it exists, you will find it in the Charters Towers Region.

From well-preserved buildings that share their history, to sandy waterways with the warmth of the sun and abundance of fresh air, we have it all.  Showcasing Australiana at its very best, Charters Towers offers you the backdrop of your choosing, whether it be raw bush authenticity, tales of a haunting past, or a family-friendly modern space.

Historic Buildings

The Region presents preserved, authentic gold mining history, with a dominance of heritage buildings in a compact area, most notably in the main streets of Charters Towers and Ravenswood, with some buildings dating back to the 1870s.

Many of these buildings are still in use today, with the grand structures providing insight into the wealth and beauty of the Region at the height of the gold boom with every step you take.

Natural Environment

The Charters Towers Region boasts rich landscapes, diverse locations, and remote wilderness, whilst also providing a glimpse of what life was like for those who inhabited before us.

From isolated national parks including White Mountains and rainforest clad mountains at Hidden Valley, salt lakes, harsh and isolated yet hauntingly beautiful, to spring-fed creeks, you are sure to find the perfect location/s to bring your visions to life.

Ravenswood

Located 89kms east of Charters Towers, this heritage-listed town is home to historic buildings, including two original hotels, Church, Courthouse, and Miner's Cottages, offering a window to times long past. 

Set amongst fantastic scenery, both natural and man-made, such as White Blow National Park and 100-year-old plus chimney's dotting the land, standing as links to the dozens of mines that littered the landscape.

Greenvale

Located just over 200 kms north of Charters Towers, Greenvale is home to the famous Three Rivers Motel, made famous by Slim Dusty with the song of the same name. 

A little outback oasis, this small country town would be the perfect setting for a true Australian story. 

Tors Drive-In

This is one of the last operational Drive-In theatres in the country.  If you are looking for a truly authentic experience, the Tors Drive-In would make an amazing backdrop.

Towers Hill

Overlooking Charters Towers, no matter the time of day, the views alone are sure to create magic.  Home to our WWII Bunkers, lots of natural wildlife, the ruins of the Pyrites Works and our very own amphitheatre, Towers Hill delivers on versatility.

The World Theatre

A world-class venue, this amazing space is capable of showcasing that intimate moment to the grand showstopping scene.  Originally the Australian Bank of Commerce, now a stunning auditorium layout and rich in heritage architecture, this space tells a tale all its own.
