Council abides by further restrictions

Charters Towers Regional Council has closed playgrounds, the skate park and outdoor gym this week following the new advice and restrictions from the National Cabinet.

Late last week, Council also closed their Administration Centre, Highway Depot and Airport Depot to the general public for walk in service.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer and Local Disaster Coordinator, Aaron Johansson, said Council will heed the advice from the National Cabinet.

“The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact our way of life, however, it is important for our community to heed the advice from the National Cabinet regarding social distancing, the closure of facilities, no travel and self-isolation.

“Although our facilities are closed to the general public, staff are still available by phone or email for any enquiries or assistance.

“I want to assure the community that essential services will continue to be maintained. We’re well prepared to continue to operate water, sewerage and waste collection,” said Mr Johansson.
Council advised they are working very closely with Queensland Health, through the Local Disaster Management Group, to stay up-to-date with the latest COVID-19 information.

“I realise there is a lot of angst in the community regarding COVID-19 and our region’s first confirmed case. I want to encourage the community to remain calm and to not panic.

“The Local Disaster Management Group has moved to Stand Up in response to this situation. We continue to meet regularly and work directly with the District and State Disaster Coordination Centres,” said Mr Johansson.
