Stay home this Easter

With the 4-day Easter break set to begin, Council is reminding the community to heed the advice from the Federal and State Governments and stay home.

The long weekend is normally an ideal time to head out and enjoy what our region has to offer, however, the Queensland Government has closed all state-managed campgrounds in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

In accordance with the restrictions from both the Federal and State Government, Council has closed all public campgrounds within the region until further notice.

Charters Towers Regional Council Chief Executive Officer and Local Disaster Coordinator, Aaron Johansson, said we need to stay home.

“We understand a lot of people like to go camping, spend time with family and friends over Easter, however, this year we need to stay home.

“We need everyone to heed the message, not just for Easter, but all the time until we can ‘flatten the curve’ of infection,” said Mr Johansson.

Under the State Government’s health direction issued Sunday 29 March 2020, everyone should stay home unless:

  • shopping for essentials - food and necessary supplies
  • medical or health care needs, including compassionate requirements
  • exercise with no more than one other person (unless from your household)
  • providing care or assistance to an immediate family member
  • work and study if you can’t work or learn remotely.

Council offices will be closed over the 4-day Easter period, however, staff will be on-call for emergencies.

Regular COVID-19 bulletins from the Local Disaster Management will be published on Council’s new dedicated web page www.charterstowers.qld.gov.au/covid-19
