Charters Towers Regional Council held its post-election meeting yesterday, to appoint the newly elected Council.

Post-election meetings are a statutory requirement, with the purpose of the meeting to allow the Councillors to make the declaration of office, appoint the Deputy Mayor and to appoint the Chair and Deputy Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG).

Mayor Frank Beveridge was sworn in on Tuesday 14 April 2020, however, he reaffirmed his commitment along with new and returning Councillors as they undertook their declaration of office.

Returning Councillors include Cr Sonia Bennetto, Cr Alan Barr, Cr Graham Lohmann and Cr Bernie Robertson. Newly elected Councillors include Cr Kate Hastie and Cr Julie Mathews.

During the meeting, Cr Sonia Bennetto was appointed Deputy Mayor, with the appointment of Mayor Frank Beveridge as Chair and Cr Graham Lohmann as Deputy Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG).

Mayor Frank Beveridge said he is honoured to lead the Region.

“I feel very privileged to be elected as the new mayor of the Charters Towers Region. I look forward to working with my fellow Councillors and congratulate them on their appointment.

“We have a great team with a wealth of knowledge and experience. It’s interesting to note that we have a fifty-fifty split in gender for our Councillors. Maybe the first time ever in our history.

“Together we’ll continue our commitment to securing a prosperous future for our communities, particularly during these uncertain times.

“COVID-19 presents a very challenging time for all of us. Our priority is to understand the impacts on our community and to make sure we are doing everything we can to assist,” said the Mayor.

The April General Meeting of Council will be held at 9:00am on Tuesday 28 April 2020 in Council’s Board Room. Following the Federal Government’s social distancing restrictions, General Meetings
will be closed to the public until further notice.
