Light up the Dawn this Anzac Day

Charters Towers Regional Council is encouraging residents to commemorate Anzac Day a different way this year, following the Coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions put in place by the Federal and State governments.

Mayor Frank Beveridge said it’s an unfortunate situation. “Our community prides itself on commemorating Anzac Day each year and unfortunately we have to do it a little differently this year.

“Due to the ongoing impacts of COVID-19, all Anzac Day Commemoration Parades and ceremonies have been cancelled.

“As an alternative to the traditional events, we’re encouraging everyone to please consider RSL Queensland’s suggestion to ‘invoke the Anzac Spirit’ by participating in the Light up the Dawn campaign this year as a means of commemorating the Day,” said Mayor Frank Beveridge.

Light up the Dawn involves standing at the end of your driveway, on your balcony or in your living room at 6am and observing a minute’s silence as the sun rises to remember all those who have served and sacrificed.

Additionally, a short commemorative service, comprising The Ode, The Last Post, a minute’s silence, Reveille and the National Anthem will be streamed on RSL Queensland’s website. For further details visit www.rslqld.org

“Anzac Day is a special time and I hope our community can take the time to remember those who have served our country during times of conflict and crisis, and to reflect upon their selfless sacrifice.

“Many have given their lives so we can enjoy the freedoms of our great country,” said Mayor Frank Beveridge.
