Flying Fox - Parks temporarily close

Charters Towers Regional Council has temporarily closed Lissner Park and Centenary Park due to the large influx of flying fox numbers in and around the trees.

Acting Mayor Cr Sonia Bennetto said public safety is Council’s priority.

“Over the past week we have seen a significant increase in flying fox numbers in town especially around the parks. A risk assessment has determined that the flying fox roosts may pose a risk to public safety, especially the risk of falling tree limbs.

“It’s unfortunate that we have to temporarily close the parks again, however public and staff safety is our first and foremost priority.”

Council will also reduce the operating hours of the 50 metre and the wading pools at the Kennedy Regiment Memorial Pool from Wednesday 11 December 2019. This will to allow for extra cleaning of the facility.

The reduced hours will only be in effect Monday to Friday for the outdoor pools. Hours will be from 8am to 6pm.

The indoor heated pool on weekdays and the weekend operating hours for all pools will open as per usual.

The main entrance to the pool will be closed with entry via the heated pool on Plummer Street.

“We understand the frustrations and disappointment of the community, especially those residents impacted by flying fox on a daily basis. We appreciate everyone’s patience.

“As flying fox are protected under Queensland’s Nature Conservation Act 1992 any dispersal actions are heavily regulated.

“Experts advise that it’s best not to disturb the bats as daytime harassment distresses the flying foxes and weakens them. This affects their ability to migrate, prolonging their stay.

“Council is working with the Department of Environment and Science on a relocation plan in mid next year when numbers are low. This will provide the best possible chances of success, and unfortunately this is a long-term project and not a quick fix.”
