Mayor Message - Anzac Day 2020 - Cr Frank Beveridge

Back

“For over 100 years, Anzac Day has been a day to honour those who have served and continue to serve our country and to reflect upon their selfless sacrifice. It’s one of Australia’s most important national commemorative occasions.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 we cannot take part in our regular formal services. However, there are many ways we can personally commemorate Anzac Day this year.

RSL Queensland is encouraging everyone to participate in the Light up the Dawn campaign. This involves standing at the end of your driveway or in your lounge room at 6am and observing a minute’s silence.

You may also want to watch the Australian War Memorial’s Anzac Day commemorative service which will be livestreamed and broadcast across the nation.

The Department of Veterans' Affairs has released an app called ‘ANZAC 360’ which allows you to take a virtual tour of locations of battles and other places where Australians have served. More information can be found here https://anzacportal.dva.gov.au

For residents who are eager to place a wreath at the Cenotaph and other locations around the region, please be mindful of social distancing requirements and to not gather. Please also be mindful of traffic as no roads will be closed.

Our region has a rich history of contribution to the war effort and many men and women from our region paid the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives. To honour them, Council will be releasing a special tribute video on Anzac Day which showcases past commemorative services.

As a community, we can ‘invoke the Anzac Spirit’ by paying our respects in a personal way this Anzac Day. Lest we forget.”
