The recently held North Queensland Sportstar Awards shone a light on the sporting talent of Charters Towers regional locals, crowning the regions first ever winners of an athlete award.

The awards, this year hosted by Mackay Regional Council aimed at celebrating and highlighting the remarkable accomplishments of athletes from various sporting disciplines throughout North Queensland.

Cr Kate Hastie was honoured to attend with, and on behalf of Council’s local athletes, saying it was exciting to see so many locals doing so well in their chosen sporting endeavours.

“This year was the first time any of our local sportspersons have been crowned as a winner in any of the athlete categories”, said Cr Hastie.

“In the past we have been fortunate enough for our sports administrators to receive recognition, but this year was our athletes turn.

Charters Towers Regional Council was pleased to have so many finalists representing the sport in our region at this year’s awards, as listed below:

  • Samuel Le Feuvre - NQ Athlete with a Disability
  • Jackson Stoll - NQ Junior Sportstar
  • Campbell Hodson - NQ Sportstar (& Rural & Remote)
  • James Lowe - NQ Sportstar (& Rural & Remote)

Council is pleased to recognise those athletes, who were successful at this year’s awards:

  • Samuel Le Feuvre – Winner, NQ Athlete with a Disability
  • James Lowe – Winner, NQ Sportstar Rural & Remote
  • Campbell Hodson – Runner Up, NQ Sportstar Rural & Remote

Cr Hastie advised that she was very thankful to the North Queensland Sports Foundation for again hosting another successful North Queensland Sportstar event.

“Awards such as this provide a platform for our local athletes to shine, and a point of recognition for all of their hard work and success”, said Cr Hastie.

“Sport plays such a large role within the Charters Towers region, and the success that our local athletes had at this year’s awards is a real indicator of how well our local sporting community is doing.

“It is proof that you can live in our rural town and still excel in your chosen sport, the facilities and mentors are there, and our athletes are thriving.
