Augmented Reality opens on Towers Hill

The new augmented reality (AR) experience ‘Towers Hill in WWII’ was officially launched this week by Mayor Liz Schmidt. The new app allows the user to experience a mixture of the real world and computer-generated images in real time.
Anyone with a compatible smart device and the new ‘Towers Hill in WWII’ app will be able to watch B-25 bombers flyover or explore the inside of a virtual bunker; full of munition.
Mayor Liz Schmidt said the AR project came to fruition after almost a year of collaboration between local historians, Council staff and the production team at Earthstory.
“An international team of 3D artists and modellers, history consultants, programmers, writers, designers and User Experience experts created this Augmented Reality experience.
“We were also able to utilise the knowledge of local historians Bill Henderson, Michael Brumby and Malcolm MacDonald and I want to thank for them for their valuable input on this project.
“This is cutting-edge technology and we’re very fortunate to be able to offer such a fantastic experience to visitors and residents.”
The AR Project cost $54,000 and forms part of the Towers Hill Abilities Ramp Project, fully funded by the Works for Queensland Program, an initiative of the Queensland Government.
Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Works for Queensland program had a great track record of kickstarting jobs and investment in Charters Towers.
“This outstanding tourism project is a wonderful example of what can be achieved for the community when our two levels of government work together,” he said.
“It is part of the $8.55 million provided to Charters Towers Regional Council through the Palaszczuk Government’s Works for Queensland program.
“I was in Charters Towers in February this year inspecting earlier Works for Queensland projects at Towers Hill, with Mayor Schmidt.
“The Palaszczuk Government will continue to work with Charters Towers Regional Council to deliver new infrastructure that supports employment and liveability for the local community.”
