Dave Chapman Park (Boat Ramp) & Weir Recreation and Ski Park

If you turn left before entering the Burdekin Weir Park and travel approximately 1 kilometre, you will reach Dave Chapman Park. A boat ramp provides easy access to enjoy a spot of fishing. Fish species include Sooty Grunter, Dew (Cat) Fish, Sleepy Cod, Barramundi and Small-mouth Grunter. It is also a well known location for birdwatching, with cormorants, pelicans, ducks and darters often spotted. Disabled facilities are available. Dogs on leash are allowed.

On the 24 October 2019 Council and the Weir Recreation and Ski Park Reference Group officially opened the Burdekin River to expanded activities. These include:

  • Skiing;
  • Powered Watercraft;
  • >4hp motors; and
  • Increased upstream access

Designated areas of operation(PDF, 597KB) are displayed at the boat ramp and available with speed restrictions between the boat ramp and designated skiing area. All activities are regulated by Maritime Safety Queensland.

Each year, as part of Council's wet season preparations, the ski buoys are removed from the river. This annual process helps protect infrastructure and ensures the area can safely accommodate changing water levels and seasonal conditions.

** Please note the Weir Recreation and Ski Park was re-opened on 10 July, 2026 **

Maritime Safety Queensland has completed the redeployment of the regulated waterway navigation buoys and a submerged objects survey in that area. Caution is advised due to the live and active nature of the Burdekin River system, as environmental flows from upstream can carry debris into the recreational section of the waterway unpredictably. Council asks all water recreational users to complete a personal inspection of the waterway, prior to water skiing use.
