Youth Council
Charters Towers Regional Council is committed to empowering young people to actively participate in local decision-making. Council has relaunched the Charters Towers Youth Council (CTYC) as an advisory committee whose role is to represent the voice of young people who live, work, study, or volunteer in the Charters Towers Region, to provide input into Council activities and decisions.
As an advisory and engagement body, Youth Council that will do this by:
- Representing the voices of young people aged 16-25 across the Charters Towers region
- Providing feedback on issues affecting youth and contribute to Council strategies, programs and events
- Building youth leadership, civic participation and understanding of local government processes
- Strengthening communication between Council and young people.
At the induction of Youth Council, Mayor Liz Schmidt said one of the key focus areas in the Community Strategic Plan is Our Civic Leadership - with a vision for engaged, transparent leadership that empowers and unites our community.
"A key strategic objective within the Plan is that 'young people are supported to develop as future civic leaders' with a commitment for Council to facilitate the Charters Towers Youth Council. This evening, we deliver on this strategy", Mayor Schmidt continued.
The revised structure includes expanded eligibility across a broader age range demographic, one-year term with opportunity for continuity, Youth Mayor and Youth Deputy Mayor leadership roles and structured involvement in Council initiatives and strategic discussions.
The portfolio Councillor for Youth Council, Cr Graham Lohmann also shared his thoughts at the Youth Council induction.
"I am looking forward to working with each of you as members of the Charters Towers Youth Council. I acknowledge and applaud the courage it took to nominate yourself for this role, and for being prepared to commit to making the Charters Towers Region a better place to live, work and visit.
"As Youth Councillors you will develop leadership and communication skills, build on your critical thinking skills and develop enduring friendships and networks, directly influence projects and services that matter most to you and help shape the future of the Charters Towers Region, such as having input in the Charters Towers CBD Master Plan project commencing later this year so that the vision of that plan reflects the needs and wants of young people.
At all levels of government, young people are underrepresented and rarely included in decisions that affect them. This is your opportunity to be the voice of young people in our community", said Councillor Lohmann.
This program reflects Council’s commitment to meaningful participation and developing future community leaders.
