The World Theatre has remained closed since February 2025 following significant water damage caused by the major weather event that impacted the region. The extent of the damage rendered the building unsafe; however, Council has since identified the underlying cause, completed detailed designs and restorations works are now well underway.

Charters Towers Regional Council Mayor Liz Schmidt emphasised the importance of the project for the community.

“The World Theatre is a treasured cultural landmark and a vital part of our region’s identity. We understand the community’s eagerness to see it reopened, and Council is committed to ensuring its revival. With funding secured and works advancing, we are confident the Theatre will once again serve as a hub for arts and entertainment”, said Mayor Schmidt.

Council is working diligently behind the scenes with contractors to deliver the restoration program, which includes replacing roofing, air conditioning, furnishings, flooring and minor works to internal walls. While contractor availability and adverse weather remain the principal risks to the schedule, the project remains on track for reopening in the second half of 2026. Photographic updates will be installed at the World Theatre notice board so the community can see the work being undertaken.

Council has secured $2.3 million in funding, significantly reducing the financial impact on ratepayers. Tenders for roof repairs, air conditioning, and seating have all been received and are within budget estimates. Council staff continue to undertake removal works where possible. Curtains and acoustic panels may be able to be cleaned, though replacement could be required. Fire panels and detectors may also need replacement, with testing to be conducted once safe access is available. Compliance will be confirmed by the Queensland Fire Department.

“We sincerely thank the community for its patience and support throughout this process. Your understanding has been invaluable, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to the World Theatre once the restoration is complete”, said Mayor Schmidt.

Council remains committed to working with all parties to ensure the Theatre is restored and reopened at the earliest opportunity.
