Karina Ewer appointed CEO of Charters Towers Regional Council

Charters Towers Regional Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Karina Ewer as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
The appointment of Ms Ewer was resolved by Councillors in a Special Meeting of Council held on Wednesday, 25 June 2025.
Ms Ewer has a wealth of experience in both the local government and private sector, along with a deep commitment to regional communities, and a proven track record of delivering large scale regional and successful public private partnership projects.
Mayor Liz Schmidt said Council is thrilled to appoint Ms Ewer to the position following a thorough and competitive recruitment process.
“Selecting a CEO is a crucial decision, and we believe that Karina’s appointment will build on the great work already underway at Council.
“Karina brings both academic insight and practical expertise to the role, along with a leadership style that empowers and encourages accountability, ensuring that the voices of our communities will remain at the heart of policy and service delivery,” continued Mayor Schmidt.
Reflecting on her appointment, Ms Ewer said as someone who grew up in North Queensland and devoted much of her career to the people of North Queensland, this appointment feels like coming home.
“I’m honoured to return to a region I care deeply about and to contribute to the future of the Charters Towers region. I look forward to working alongside Council and the community to build on the strong foundations already in place,” continued Ms Ewer.
This leadership transition follows the resignation of outgoing CEO Mr Martin Drydale earlier this year and the appointment of an Interim CEO while a permanent replacement was sought.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Interim CEO, Scott Greensill, for the contribution he has made since stepping into the role.
“Scott has successfully led the organisation through this transition period, which included the development of the 2025/2026 Budget, and we wish him all the best for the future,” added Mayor Schmidt.
Ms Ewer will formally commence her appointment as CEO on Monday, 18 August 2025, with Mr Greensill to continue as Interim CEO until this date.
