Charters Towers Regional Council advises that from Thursday, 21 August 2025, flying-fox dispersal activities will commence earlier, from 5:30am – 8am, Monday to Sunday, until further notice. Residents are asked to keep noise-sensitive pets indoors or secured during these times.
To strengthen the effectiveness of the program, there will also be an increased use of pyrotechnics as part of Council’s approved dispersal methods.
These changes reflect Council’s commitment to ramping up efforts for a period of time to achieve the best possible outcome, with the expectation that once flying-fox activity settles, operations can be scaled back. Council will be monitoring and undertaking targeted dispersal activities where required throughout the urban area of Charters Towers, including Manners Street, Lissner Park, and Centenary Park.
Council is mindful that the dispersal can be distressing for some residents, including those with PTSD or heightened sensitivities, and encourages affected community members to take appropriate precautions.
Council acknowledges the impact the dispersal has on residents and sincerely thanks the community for their patience and understanding while this important work is underway.
