Charters Towers Regional Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs Michelle Clarke as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
The appointment of Mrs Clarke was resolved by Council at a Special Meeting on Wednesday, 24 June 2026 following a thorough and competitive recruitment process.
Mrs Clarke has significant local government experience across New South Wales and Queensland, including previously serving as Chief Executive Officer for both Richmond and Balonne Shire Councils, as well as other senior leadership roles throughout her career.
Mayor Liz Schmidt said Council is delighted to appoint Mrs Clarke to the position.
“Together with Councillors and the Council team, I look forward to welcoming Michelle into the role of Chief Executive Officer and working with her to guide Council into the future.
“Michelle brings a wealth of experience in local government, along with strong financial and governance expertise and an understanding of our region which we’re sure will support a smooth transition,” Mayor Schmidt continued.
Reflecting on her appointment, Mrs Clarke said she was excited to move back to the region she has lived, worked and visited for the past 20 years.
“I look forward to meeting the team and working with Council and the community to continuously improve Charters Towers Regional Council,” continued Mrs Clarke.
This leadership transition follows the resignation of the previous CEO earlier this year and the appointment of an Acting CEO while a permanent replacement was sought.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Acting CEO, Mr Martin Drydale for his guidance during this transition period.
“Having previously held the position as our CEO, Martin has seamlessly guided the organisation over the past few months, including the development of our 2026/2027 Budget,” Mayor Schmidt added.
Mrs Clarke will formally commence her appointment as CEO on Monday, 24 August 2026, with Martin Drydale to complete a comprehensive handover, ensuring a smooth transition.
