Charters Towers Regional Council advises that Lissner Park has now reopened to the public following recent flying-fox dispersal activities. The reopening follows the successful relocation of the majority of the flying-fox colony from the town centre and local park areas, allowing for the safe and renewed use of this valued community space.

The dispersal program has resulted in a significant reduction in flying-fox presence within Lissner Park and surrounding recreational areas. While a number of flying-foxes remain in small creek corridors to the north of the town centre, their presence in these areas is expected to continue to decline as the animals move further north.

Council continues to work in accordance with relevant environmental guidelines and animal welfare considerations throughout the dispersal process. Ongoing monitoring will continue to ensure the situation remains stable, with particular attention given to the animals’ natural migration patterns and any potential return activity.

The reopening of Lissner Park restores access for families and visitors to enjoy the park’s facilities and open spaces once more. Council appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation during this period and acknowledges the importance of balancing public access with responsible wildlife management.

Charters Towers Regional Council remains committed to managing flying-fox activity in a way that supports both community use of public spaces and the wellbeing of native wildlife. Further updates will be provided should there be any significant changes to the situation.
