Flying-foxes play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. They are essential pollinators and seed dispersers, helping regenerate native vegetation across Queensland, including eucalypts, melaleucas and bloodwoods.

Without flying-foxes, our landscape would look very different.

Flying-foxes are a protected species under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, and Council is legally required to manage them in line with the Queensland Code of Practice – Ecologically Sustainable Management of Flying-Fox Roosts and Council’s Flying-Fox Management Plan.

This means Council must balance:
✔ Environmental protection
✔ Community wellbeing
✔ Animal welfare

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing clear, factual information to help the community better understand what’s happening, why certain actions can and can’t occur, and how you can help.
