Charters Towers Regional Council has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to retain its contribution of up to 75 per cent under Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Following strong advocacy from councils across Queensland, the Government announced that it has abandoned plans to change the DRFA to a 50-50 split, choosing instead to retain the current cost-sharing model of disaster recovery funding when eligibility criteria are met.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said the decision was a significant win for regional communities and would provide certainty for councils undertaking the vital work of disaster recovery and reconstruction.

"The proposed changes would have placed significant financial pressure on councils and communities already dealing with the impacts of natural disasters.

"Council appreciates the Federal Government listening to the concerns raised by Queensland communities and recognising the serious consequences the proposed changes would have had for disaster-affected regions," Mayor Schmidt said.

Council joined with local governments from across Queensland in advocating against the changes recognising the critical role disaster recovery funding plays in helping regional communities recover and rebuild.

The decision to retain the current arrangement will allow councils to focus on restoring rebuilding infrastructure, supporting effected communities and delivering resilience projects rather, than finding additional funding for essential recovery works.

Mayor Schmidt said the decision was a positive result that came from councils across Queensland speaking with one voice.

“Council sincerely thanks the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) and councils across the state for their united advocacy effort.

"With the leadership and support of the LGAQ, councils stood together to ensure the concerns of rural and regional communities were heard," Mayor Schmidt continued.

This outcome demonstrates the strength of local governments working collaboratively on issues that matter to our communities.

The funding certainty will ensure Council can continue delivering recovery and reconstruction projects across the region following future disaster events.
