Council sets advocacy priorities

Charters Towers Regional Council has endorsed its 2026-2027 Advocacy Priorities, identifying five key projects and initiatives that will strengthen essential services, support economic growth and improve quality of life across the region.
The priorities focus on securing investment in a new hospital, addressing skills shortages through higher education opportunities, delivering Big Rocks Weir, increasing Defence investment in the region and ensuring fair Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) funding.
These advocacy priorities reflect Council's long-term vision for a region of strong, self-reliant communities set within a productive and sustainable landscape.
Mayor Liz Schmidt said these priorities are about ensuring our region has access to the infrastructure, services and opportunities needed to thrive now and into the future.
"Our vision is to build a future where residents enjoy a high-quality rural lifestyle, supported by access to essential services, employment opportunities and strong community connections," Mayor Schmidt continued.
Effective advocacy plays a vital role in ensuring the region's needs are recognised by State and Federal decision-makers by building strong partnerships, presenting a compelling case for investment and keeping our region front of mind when funding decisions are made
The advocacy agenda aligns with Council's commitment to developing a diverse and resilient economy underpinned by agriculture, mining, tourism and service industries.
Council's advocacy efforts are focused on:
- A new hospital to replace outdated health infrastructure and improve access to modern healthcare services for current and future community needs.
- Greater access to higher education opportunities to address workforce shortages, retain local talent and support long-term economic development.
- The delivery of Big Rocks Weir to improve water security, support agricultural expansion and unlock investment opportunities.
- Increased Defence investment and presence to create jobs, stimulate economic activity and strengthen the region's role in Defence operations and training.
- Fair and sustainable DRFA funding arrangements to ensure essential infrastructure can be restored following natural disasters while reducing the burden on communities and ratepayers.
Each priority has the potential to deliver long-term benefits, helping the region attract investment, strengthen services and support future population growth.
Council will continue to work with State and Federal governments, industry and regional partners to progress the advocacy priorities and secure support for projects that benefit the wider community.
"Through collaboration and targeted investment, we can continue to grow our region in a way that strengthens our identity, supports economic development and enhances quality of life.
"These priorities represent practical opportunities to secure the investment needed to support our communities, businesses and future generations," continued Mayor Schmidt.
