Charters Towers Regional Council is inviting the community to help shape a new Tourism Marketing Strategy and Plan that will guide how the region is promoted and supported in the coming years.

The development of this strategy follows the recent completion of Council’s Destination Management Plan 2025 to 2030, which sets the long term direction for how the visitor economy will grow and evolve.

The Tourism Marketing Strategy and Plan is the next step in this process and will outline how the region is presented to visitors, how key experiences are promoted, and how marketing efforts align with community values.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said tourism plays a vital role in supporting businesses, jobs and community services.

“The new strategy will help to strengthen the visitor economy, support local businesses and celebrate the unique stories and identity of the region,” said Mayor Schmidt.

The strategy development process includes reviewing current marketing activity, defining a future vision and developing practical actions to guide how Council promotes and positions the region.

Stage one of the project is complete, including data collection and stakeholder workshops with tourism operators, businesses and community organisations.

Council is now inviting the broader community to take part in the next stage through a short online survey.

The survey is open until Monday, 11 May 2026 and is available both online and in hardcopy at Council’s Administration Centre, Visitor Information Centre, and the Excelsior Library.

Council is encouraging residents, business owners and visitors to get involved, regardless of whether they work in tourism or simply enjoy what the region offers.

“Tourism remains a key priority in Council’s strategic planning, with community feedback emphasising the need for it to remain well managed, beneficial and reflective of local identity.

“This is a great opportunity for locals to help shape how our region is promoted and how our story is shared with visitors, and every perspective makes a difference,” added Mayor Schmidt.
