The Charters Towers region will join with the rest of Australia to commemorate ANZAC Day on Saturday, 25 April 2026.
The Charters Towers Commemorations commence at 5:50am with a Dawn Service to be held at the War Memorial Cemetery located to the north of Charters Towers on the Lynd Highway. The Commemoration March will start at 9am from Mosman Street and end at the Gill Street Cenotaph for the Commemoration Ceremony.
Mayor Liz Schmidt is encouraging people and families to line the march route to show their support for the marchers as they proceed.
“Ample gathering spaces will be available in designated areas around the Cenotaph, offering the public an opportunity to lay a wreath at the appropriate moment during the service.
“If you are intending to lay a wreath at the commemoration ceremony, please make contact with Council by emailing events@charterstowers.qld.gov.au. There will be designated areas for wreath layers so your emailed advice will assist the organisers”, says Mayor Schmidt.
“Kindly note that Gregory Development Road (near the Lynd Highway Cemetery) will be closed to all traffic from 5:15am. Gill Street will also be closed from Mosman Street to Boundary Street from 6:00am. Please be advised that any vehicles parked within these areas will not be able to be moved until after the event has concluded.” she says.
The ceremony areas at the Cemetery and Cenotaph in Gill Street are not undercover, those attending the service at either location are advised to eat a light meal prior to attending, bring a hat, and a water bottle.
The illustration below shows the designated areas that will be set aside for the various groups surrounding the Cenotaph on ANZAC Day.
While we encourage our community to attend local services where possible, we understand not everyone can be there in person.
“I encourage residents to take a moment at home this ANZAC Day, whether it’s observing a minute’s silence at dawn, listening to The Last Post, displaying a poppy, or simply reflecting on the service and sacrifice of those who served, including those who fought in the Gallipoli Campaign”, said Mayor Schmidt.
Even the smallest gesture of remembrance helps keep the ANZAC spirit alive in our community.
The Charters Towers Region has a number of commemorative events across all townships. A full list can be found below and also on Council’s website.
