Charters Towers Regional Council welcomes 2026 intake of new trainees

Charters Towers Regional Council is pleased to welcome new trainees under its Apprentice and Traineeship Program.

Four new recruits have commenced their journey with Council, gaining hands-on experience across customer service, procurement, tourism and library services, while working towards a nationally recognised Certificate III in Business - all while earning a wage.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said the program plays an important role in building local career pathways and supporting workforce growth across the region.

“These traineeships allow people to gain real-world experience while working towards a recognised qualification, giving them the confidence and skills to build lasting careers in Charters Towers.

“When people can train, work and build their careers locally, it benefits individuals, families and the broader community.

“It’s a win-win for job seekers and for the future of our region”, said Mayor Schmidt.

Council gratefully acknowledges the funding provided by Queensland Government’s Department of Trade, Employment and Training under the First Start Program.

The First Start Program is designed to support young Queensland school leavers and disadvantaged job seekers to gain a nationally recognised qualification and 12 months of paid employment. Council has committed funding to deliver its trainee program, with wage subsidy support provided through the First Start initiative. In 2026, Council welcomes trainees in the following positions:

• Customer Service and Records Trainee

• Visitor Services and Tourism Trainee

• Procurement Administration Trainee

• Library Trainee

Mayor Schmidt said Council remains committed to investing in people and strengthening the local workforce.

“By supporting traineeships across key service areas, Council is investing in a capable workforce that will continue to deliver for the community well into the future,” she said.
