It’s time to shine a spotlight on our local heroes!
Do you know someone in the Charters Towers Region whose generosity, dedication, and commitment make them a true local hero?
The 2026 Australia Day Awards are the perfect opportunity to recognise those extraordinary individuals and organisations that go above and beyond to make our community stronger.
The Awards formally acknowledge the people and groups whose efforts create lasting impacts across the region. Council is now calling on the community to submit nominations for those who deserve recognition.
Mayor Liz Schmidt said the Awards are a chance to highlight the spirit of the Charters Towers Region and the people who make it unique.
“Our region is filled with remarkable people who put their time, skills and passion into helping others.
“The Australia Day Awards are about giving back to those who give so much. This is an opportunity to ensure their efforts don’t go unnoticed. I encourage everyone to think about the people and groups who inspire them and put a nomination forward,” continued Mayor Schmidt.
Award categories include:
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Community Event of the Year
- Sportsperson of the Year
- Young Sportsperson of the Year
- Sports Administrator of the Year
- Cultural Person of the Year
- Young Cultural Person of the Year
The nomination process is simple and can be completed online in just a few minutes. Paper copies of the Nomination Form are also available at Council’s Administration Centre.
Nominations close at 4:00pm on Friday, 28 November 2025.
All nominees will be invited to attend the 2026 Australia Day Awards Ceremony on 25 January 2026, where the winners will be announced.
