Charters Towers Regional Council is proud to announce they have successfully secured $8 million in funding for Packages 1 and 2 of the Water for Growth Project.

The investment will allow Council to address aging infrastructure and implement modern solutions that improve efficiency and reliability by ensuring vital improvements to the town’s water infrastructure can be undertaken.

By upgrading critical components of the water network, the project will reduce maintenance costs, enhance system performance, and future-proof the town’s water supply against increasing demand and climate change.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said the funding represents a significant investment in the future of Charters Towers, benefiting both current residents and enabling sustainable growth.

“This project will assist the town during times of water pressure and supply challenges, ensuring residents continue to enjoy reliable, compliant, and secure access to water,” continued Mayor Schmidt.

Council remains committed to delivering a modern, compliant water supply system that secures Charters Towers’ future, supports housing development, strengthens business opportunities, and ensures minimal interruptions for residents during construction.

This investment is not only about infrastructure, it is about community resilience.  By upgrading critical water assets, Council is ensuring that families, businesses, and future generations can rely on a safe and sustainable water supply.

“In strengthening our essential infrastructure, we can support new housing developments while ensuring existing households enjoy improved water pressure and consistent service.

“Enhanced water security will also encourage new businesses to invest in Charters Towers, while giving residents confidence that their everyday needs are being met,” added Mayor Schmidt.

In addition, enhanced water security will provide confidence for industrial and commercial investors, helping to attract new enterprises and create jobs, while supporting the long‑term prosperity of the region.

The Water for Growth Project is a series of seven packages, with future packages to deliver additional reservoirs, booster pump stations, and network extensions.

With detailed design already underway for future packages, Charters Towers is well positioned to continue strengthening its water network as further funding opportunities arise.

Council acknowledges the support of the Queensland Government through the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program, which has made this funding possible.
