For most people, the health risk posed by flying-foxes is very low - especially when they are left undisturbed.
Never handle a flying-fox, alive or dead.
If you find a dead flying-fox: ❌ Do not touch it Contact Council or a licensed wildlife carer for advice
If you are bitten or scratched: • Immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes • Apply antiseptic • Seek urgent medical advice
Hendra virus – information for horse owners: Hendra virus is transmitted from flying-foxes to horses, and rarely to humans via infected horses. Horse owners should:
✔ Avoid placing feed and water under trees where flying-foxes roost or feed ✔ Cover feed and water points where possible ✔ Maintain good paddock hygiene
There is a highly effective vaccine available to protect your horse/s against Hendra, for more information call your local vet.
These simple steps significantly reduce risk.
