Charters Towers Regional Council was pleased to welcome Premier David Crisafulli to the region on Wednesday, 8 October 2025.
The visit, which was the result of a long standing invitation extended to the Premier by Mayor Schmidt, was marked by a series of productive discussions, and a shared commitment to strengthening future collaboration between Council and State Government.
Mayor Liz Schmidt was delighted at the opportunity to host the Premier during his time in Charters Towers.
“The visit provided the chance to engage on a range of important topics, including advocacy, funding opportunities, and other matters relevant to the community’s growth and wellbeing,” said Mayor Schmidt.
Topics high on Council’s agenda included, but not be limited to:
- Charters Towers Hospital Replacement Project; Replacing outdated and inadequate health infrastructure by building a new hospital
- Investment into aged care: Upgrading aged care facilities to improve access to essential services for older residents in regional communities
- Supporting Higher Education; Investing in local higher education to improve access to tertiary education, retain young talent, and build a skilled workforce for future regional growth
- Water Security Key Upgrades: Water infrastructure servicing the region is in urgent need of upgrades
- Addressing the Housing Crisis: Increasing investment in affordable and accessible housing to meet growing community demand
During his visit, the Premier also hosted a meet and greet event in town for invited guests.
The gathering provided a great opportunity for community members to meet the Premier, ask questions, share their views, and hear directly from him about key issues affecting the region.
“This visit allowed Council the opportunity to engage on a wide range of issues and advocate for real investment in our region’s future.
“The relationship between the Queensland Government and Council has definitely strengthened as a result of the visit and we are grateful for the opportunity to raise local concerns and priorities,” continued Mayor Schmidt.
