The Charters Towers Regional Council was formed on 15th March 2008 through the amalgamation of the Charters Towers City Council and Dalrymple Shire Council.
The Council represents a predominantly rural area covering about 70,000 square kilometres (equivalent to the size of the State of Tasmania). The Council is located in the coastal hinterland of North Queensland stretching north to Ingham and south to Bowen and is centre on the historical gold city of Charters Towers. Charters Towers is 136km, or an easy 90 minute drive, south west of Townsville North Queensland.
The Council boasts the convenience of bordering the tropical north's best attractions, and is comprised of rugged mountainous rainforest areas in the north east, and basalt strewn grasslands to sandy desert plains in the south west.
Charters Towers is a scenic gold mining city that is big on history and character. From a chance discovery of gold in 1871, Charters Towers was soon turned into a bustling metropolis, which in its heyday, boasted being the second largest city in Queensland.
Today, the pace is a little less hectic, with locals able to take advantage of the rich heritage of Charters Towers, whilst enjoying an affordable lifestyle with modern housing and well established cultural, health, educational, sporting and recreational facilties. The Charters Towers business centre supports the growing mining and beef industry sectors with excellent retail, manufacturing, transport and mining services. Charters Towers is recognised as a centre of academic excellence with a range of private and public schools servicing the region and is located close to James Cook University.
In addition, there is the opportunity to enjoy the rural outback and heritage charm of the smaller townships of Ravenswood, Pentland, Greenvale, Mingela, Homestead, Balfes Creek and Sellheim and the localities of Hervey's Range and Belyando Crossing which are also located within the region.
The population of the region is approximately 12,500 and the Council employs approximately 240 employees.
