Update on World Theatre closure and remediation efforts
Published on 03 September 2025
Charters Towers Regional Council is committed to keeping the community informed about the status of The World Theatre, a valued cultural and community asset.
The Theatre has long served as a cornerstone of the region’s arts and cultural landscape, offering cinema, live performance, gallery, and event spaces.
It plays a vital role in supporting community connection and contributing to local economic development through a diverse range of events and activities.
Mayor Liz Schmidt explained that the facility has remained closed since early this year following significant water ingress caused by heavy rainfall, leading to mould growth and infrastructure issues.
“While Investigations into the root cause of the water ingress are ongoing, it is clear substantial remediation works are required to return the facility to a safe and operable condition,” continued Mayor Schmidt.
To date, specialist assessments have identified concerns with the roofing, air-conditioning, and some potential structural issues.
Following consultation with internal stakeholders, Council has submitted a funding application through the Community and Recreational Assets Recovery Program; a joint initiative of the Queensland and Federal Governments.
The outcome of the application is pending and may be contingent on the resolution of related insurance claims.
Based on current known works and allowing for contingencies such as weather, contractor availability, and material supply, preliminary timelines suggest a possible reopening in June 2026. This timeline is indicative only at this stage and may be subject to change due to unforeseen issues or factors beyond Council’s control.
At its August General Meeting, Council committed to proceeding with initial works to commence the remediation process.
Council is working to have the roof repaired in time for the coming wet season, preventing further damage to the site.
“While the facility remains closed, shows and events are still being scheduled and moved to the Arthur Titley Centre and Henry’s where possible, which is great news.
“We appreciate the community’s ongoing patience and understanding as we work to restore this important facility”, continued Mayor Schmidt.
Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
