Mayor Christmas Message - Mayor Liz Schmidt

Back

“On behalf of Councillors Sonia Bennetto, Mike Power, Graham Lohmann, Bernie Robertson, Alan Barr, Roma Bailey and CEO Aaron Johansson and all Staff, I want to wish all residents a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Over the Christmas period, all Council offices will be closed from 12pm, Tuesday 24 December and will reopen at 8:30am on Thursday 2 January 2020. For urgent assistance during this period, call Council on 4761 5300.

As the year draws to a close, it’s a great time to look back over the things we’ve accomplished in 2019. It has been another big year for our region and Council.

Many projects have been started and completed, with many more still to come in the new year.

A few of the highlights include:
  • The completion of the new Town Plan. As a Council we are extremely happy that we’ve been able to adopt our new Regional Town Plan.
  • We officially opened the Weir Recreation and Ski Park which allows expanded activities on the Burdekin River, including water skiing and other powered watercraft to be permitted.
  • We released the Draft Local Government Infrastructure Plan for community consultation. The plan addresses the future infrastructure needs of our region. This includes future roads, pathways, parks, sporting facilities, water infrastructure and land for community facilities.
  • Free public Wi-Fi is now available to the community and visitors at major public locations. Providing public internet allows Charters Towers to join other communities in becoming a more connected and accessible city. It’s a great advantage for our community.
Stay safe this Christmas season and enjoy the holidays with family, friends and loved ones.”
