The centre is located at 74 Mosman Street, which is at the top of Gill Street, facing the T-intersection. The centre holds a wealth of knowledge on Charters Towers and the regional and surrounding outback towns. This extensive range of information includes the Charters Towers Region, Townsville and Magnetic Island and the themed driving routes of The Great Inland Way, Overlander's Way, The Great Tropical Drive, The Matilda Highway and The Savannah Way. Also available are public internet facilities and a booking service for local tours and attractions.

The centre is also home to a dedicated team of local volunteers. Their general knowledge of Charters Towers, as well as being part of the town's history, plays a big part towards the centre's unique and friendly experience for visitors.

The centre occupies a beautifully restored heritage building that has an adjoining Orientation Room. Here visitors get their first taste of the 'ghosts of gold'  Heritage Trail watching the Orientation Film that explains how 'The World' came to Charters Towers, following the discovery of gold. Visitors can take a virtual tour of the city and witness the change from a past era.

Come in and meet a local..... you'll be glad you did.

CHARTERS TOWERS, NEW CENTURY, NEW NATION 1901

BY MICHAEL BRUMBY

After giving an insight into the history and discovery of gold in North Queensland, the writer (Michael Brumby) leads you on a journey of the establishing of the "Premier Goldfield", Charters Towers.

The publication also gives an account of the Commonwealth celebrations of 1901 when the goldfield celebrations involved a procession, a day in the park, an evening concert and a sports day. Around these four activities is told the story of Charters Towers, a goldfield in a new nation entering a new century.

The book celebrates the work of the Charters Towers and Dalrymple Archives Group, to whom all profits from its sale will be directed.

RAVENSWOOD

WITHIN LIVING MEMORY

BY KH KENNEDY AND SIRIOL GIFFNEY

Dalrymple Shire during the Peter Black years.

Within Living Memory is not an empiricist approach to the recent history of the Shire. It stands in stark contrast to Joan Neal's centennial contribution to Dalrymple Shire, Beyond the Burdekin (1982) which concentrates on the three themes of pastoralism, mining and local government from early settlement until the 1950s.

Three years ago, or thereabouts, Dalrymple Shire Council decided to commission a contemporary history of embracing the Peter Black years. Black had been Chairman/Mayor since April 1973, a Councillor from 1961 when he succeeded his father in local government at the tender age of 26.

The Council gesture, however, was respectful: Black is one of Australia's longest serving local government leaders, widely experienced on semi-government boards, awarded the Order of Australia in 1992, bigotedly committed to rural issues especially quality of life, education and cultural enhancement, community self-management through funding for parochial needs, and reconciliation with indigenous people.

Within the Charters Towers-Dalrymple region, Black is a "living legend", although not without his critics.
