Queen’s Baton Relay: Once in a lifetime experience
It’s been years in the making, however, in just over 2 weeks, 35 local batonbearers will proudly take part in the Queen’s Baton Relay, as it travels through Pentland, Homestead and Charters Towers. The GC2018 Relay will be the longest and most accessible ever, not just passing through, but stopping in each community it visits.
For the Charters Towers Region’s leg, it will be one year since the Baton began its 230,000km journey to the Gold Coast. Leaving from Buckingham Palace on Commonwealth Day, 13 March 2017, the Queen’s Baton will arrive in Pentland on Commonwealth Day, 12 March 2018.
Starting at 12:30pm, the Baton will travel along the Flinders Highway and into Mill Street, where it will stop for a short time for the Pentland Community Celebration. Seven batonbearers will carry the Queen’s Baton for this part of the journey.
Kicking off just after 1:30pm, the Homestead community will welcome the Queen’s Baton as it continues its journey along the Flinders Highway. Three batonbearers will make their way through Homestead, where the baton will stop for a short Community Celebration at 1:45pm.
25 batonbearers will carry the Baton for the Charters Towers leg which will begin at Brownson Park at 4:30pm. The Baton will travel along High Street, into Boundary Street and then into Gill Street. It will make its way past Lissner Park, before finally reaching Centenary Park at 5:30pm for the community celebration - “Party in the Park.”
Mayor Liz Schmidt expressed her excitement and said she was proud of all the local batonbearers. “This is a once in a lifetime experience and a very exciting time for our region to have the Queen’s Baton travel through our region.
I want to invite everyone to come out and line the streets, to show our support to the local batonbearers and celebrate their achievements. It would be great to see the local businesses get involved and decorate their shop fronts for the relay.”
During the Queen’s Baton Relay and the Party in the Park, various roads will be closed and parking restrictions may apply. For more information visit www.charterstowers.qld.gov.au/queens-baton-relay
