It’s going to be a party!

The Queen’s Baton Relay is coming! To celebrate, Council will be holding a “Party in the Park” in Centenary Park on 12 March 2018. Kicking off at 3:00pm with fun and games for the whole family, the crowd will be entertained with kid’s comedian and presenter, Sean Murphy.

Sean will MC the night and will bring his wit and family comedy, that has entertained audiences all over the world, to Charters Towers. Families can also enjoy face painting, jumping castle, food stalls and live entertainment from local musicians.

The headline act will be 2017 The Voice winner, Judah Kelly.  Judah played previously at the Charters Towers Country Music Festival in 2017. He describes his music as “country with soul.”

The Queen’s Baton will arrive at Centenary Park at 5:30pm, being carried by Australia Day Sportsperson of the year winner, Fred Schneider. It will be formally welcomed by Mayor Liz Schmidt and by local Indigenous dancers who will provide the Welcome to Country.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said she is looking forward to seeing the Relay and celebrating with the community. “Bring your family to the Queen’s Baton Relay and experience this once in a lifetime event. Then come and celebrate in the park.

So much planning and work has gone in to provide a huge celebration. We have a great line up of entertainment with kid’s comedian Sean Murphy, the 2017 Voice winner, Judah Kelly and lots of local talent.”

The Queen’s Baton will arrive in Queensland tomorrow, 3 March and will make its way through our region before heading towards the Gold Coast for the XXI Commonwealth Games.

The “Party in the Park” is a free community event and will be from 3:00pm to 7:30pm. Parking will be available at Kerswell Oval on Baker Street and the vacant lot beside Eventide. Churchill Street (behind the park) will be closed to traffic from approximately 2pm until late, with only local and emergency vehicle access.
