Vandals Destroy Community Facilities

Newly installed solar lights on the Towers Hill walkway have been vandalised over the weekend. 12 new solar lights were installed on Friday and by Saturday, 5 of the lights had been destroyed along with the concrete around the lights.

Solar Lights Walking Track Vandalism November 2017

This is not the first instance of vandalism at Towers Hill since the construction of the walking path. In September concrete form work was removed and road closure signs stolen. Obscene graffiti was also painted onto the path.

Mayor Liz Schmidt expressed her disappointment at the recent vandalism. “It’s very disappointing to see such destruction. Facilities such as the walking track are for the benefit of the Community. Vandals are hurting the Community they live in.

The only way to stop such vandalism is for everyone to stand up against it. If you see or hear anything, report it.” said the Mayor.

A total of 94 solar lights will be installed along the path at a cost of $35,904 (including GST). The lights will be installed every 7.1 metres along the walking track to comply with walkway lighting standards.

The damaged lights and concrete will be assessed to see if they can be repaired.

The Towers Hill walking track is an initiative of the Queensland Government. Completion is expected by 30 November 2017 not anticipating further vandalism or weather conditions.

Council encourages residents to report any incidents of vandalism to Council on 4761 5300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or https://www.crimestoppersqld.com.au.
