Mayor Message - Be Prepared - Mayor Liz Schmidt

 

We often hear the messages of ‘Get Ready’ or ‘If It’s Flooded Forget It.’ However, for the majority of residents, storm season comes and goes without much impact. We get some heavy rain and the power may go out for a few hours and a few branches come down in the backyard.
 
Because of this, we become complacent. The important messages of being ready and well prepared are not heeded and are replaced with ‘we’ll be right’ or ‘it won’t happen to us’ attitudes.
 
What if something were to happen? Would you be ready? Would your family be prepared?
 
Our region has recently experienced an ongoing heatwave, storms which blew over trees, caused structural damage to buildings, power outages and flash flooding. Emergency crews had to perform two swift water rescues last week on Bluff Rd and at Southern Cross.
 
Now is the time to heed the messages – ‘Get Ready’ and ‘If It’s Flooded Forget It.’
Stay well clear of flood waters, even if you think your vehicle is capable of crossing flooded roads.
 
Secure loose items around your home, clean gutters, prepare a ‘What If’ plan and prepare an emergency kit.
 
An emergency kit should include:
  • a portable radio
  • a torch
  • spare batteries
  • first aid it
  • non-perishable food
  • sturdy gloves
  • waterproof bags
  • candles and matches
  • essential medications
  • copies of important documents (insurance details, birth certificates, prescription refills, etc)
  • special food and medication for infants, elderly or disabled family members
  • a portable gas cooker in the event of long-term power outages
