Don't plant trees on your footpath - Council warning

Charters Towers Regional Council is reminding residents not to plant trees on Council-owned footpaths.

The call follows two requests from residents to remove problem trees from footpaths in School and Mosman streets.

Council CEO Mark Crawley said the requests have been received by the residents who were concerned with the damage being done to house guttering and the potential danger of falling branches.

"In both cases, the offending trees are a danger to members of the public but were also causing damage to residents' houses with gutting needing to be replaced in one instance because of the leaves," Mr Crawley said.

"It's unfortunate that residents have to put up with the consequences of someone else's decision, years ago, to plant the trees but it's also an expensive exercise for Council and one that we want to avoid in the future."

Mr Crawley reminded residents that they had no authority or approval to plant any type of tree on the footpath which is in fact Council property.

"Council reminds people – don't plant trees on the footpath, keep your tree planting to within your own yard," he said.

"Residents can be well intentioned and believe they will maintain and prune the tree they plant.

"But when the property is sold, invariably the tree becomes a Council problem."

Mr Crawley said significant damage was occurring in numerous streets in Charters Towers, caused by tree roots impacting on both kerbing infrastructure and on the road surface.

"There is also the real danger of roots being a trip hazard for people using either the footpath or the road."

The removal of the trees in School and Mosman streets is being undertaken by qualified and trained staff in Council's tree pruning crew following a full risk assessment being undertaken before work starts.
