Councillor message - Qld Road Safety Week - Cr Graham Lohmann

"The 2019 Road Safety Week message is clear and simple – “put road safety first.”

With 245 people killed on Queensland roads in 2018 alone and over 5,000 seriously injured, it comes as no surprise that almost everyone has been touched by road trauma.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, drivers, passengers and pedestrians.  No matter how long or short the journey, how rushed or relaxed, everyone intends to reach the end of their journey safely, unfortunately, that is not always the case.  Crashes do occur, though many are preventable.

Failing to drive to the conditions - road, weather and driver capability, being distracted by mobile phones and the vehicle’s occupants, driving whilst fatigued, speeding and drink/drug driving are just a few of the obvious preventable causes of crashes.

I’m pledging to support the Queensland Government to put road safety first and I urge you to join me in doing so. Find out more at streetsmarts.initiatives.qld.gov.au

Actions speak louder than words however, and it is the safe behaviour of all road users that will reduce the impact of road trauma on our community.

Road safety should be everyone’s first responsibility so together we can make sure that everyone gets home safely."
