Council Urges Responsible Pet Ownership

During the Christmas season, many people find themselves as proud new pet owners. However, before you rush off to buy a new pet or adopt, it’s important you select a pet that best complements your lifestyle. The type, breed, where you live, how you live, should all be factored into your choice.

If you’re leaving your pet behind for the holidays, ensure you’ve arranged with someone to pet-sit in your absence, ensuring it has plenty of clean water, food and is not under stress, especially during loud events.

Summer storms and New Year fireworks can make your pet very anxious or afraid. To avoid your pet running away, take extra steps to ensure their safety. Ensure your pet is wearing proper identification, close the gate and give your pet a little more attention.

Whether you’re a new or experienced pet owner, there are a few things to consider when being a responsible pet owner:
- Register your dog with Council
- Microchip Your Pet
- Provide plenty of clean water
- Keep pet food in a vermin proof container
- Good keeping conditions (secure enclosure)
- De-sex
- Vaccinations and medications (flea, tick, heartworm medications)

Owning a pet can provide great joy and companionship but it does come with responsibility. To ensure the health and well-being of your pet and to find out what your obligations are, visit www.charterstowers.qld.gov.au

If you’re looking for a new pet, from time to time throughout the year the pound has a number of animals available for adoption.  Contact Council Rangers on 0419 022 052 for more information.
