Council meets with Adani executive
Charters Towers Regional Council continues to push for jobs spin-off from the giant Carmichael coal project in the Galilee Basin.
Mayor Frank Beveridge, along with councillors Wally Brewer, Brian Beveridge and Roma Bailey, Council director of Planning and Sustainable Development Ramon Jayo and president of the Charters Towers Chamber of Commerce and Mines Wayne Miller met with Adani Australia’s general manager of corporate affairs Muturaj Guruswamy in Townsville on Thursday.
The Mayor said he was happy to have further contact with Adani which Council had requested.
“The meeting, which was hosted by Townsville Port Authority, was very upbeat and I think continues to lay the groundwork for more jobs in the Council region,” Cr Beveridge said.
“Adani will be transporting a lot of their construction material and fuel through the Port of Townsville and then through Charters Towers and down to the Carmichael mine.
“The reality is that the road between Charters Towers and Belyando will need to be upgraded and Council is endeavouring to ensure this happens.
“We know Adani is talking to the State Government on this matter and what Council hopes is that when that upgrade occurs, it will mean jobs locally.”
Cr Beveridge said Council and the Chamber of Commerce will continue their proactive approach with Adani.
“We want to make sure we keep on the front foot with Adani so that whatever jobs eventuate, we know about them,” he said.
“Council also has an excellent working relationship with the Townsville Port Authority. These relationships are vital and allow Council to be kept well informed of developments in various areas.”
Cr Beveridge said the State Government’s announcement this week that it had reached agreement with Adani on the Abbot Point dredging process was an indication that the Carmichael project was moving ahead.
The Adani group plan to construct a huge $16 billion Carmichael coal project in the Galilee Basin. The company has already gained final Federal Government approval for a 310km rail line to carry coal from the mine to Abbot Point.
