Council cancels compulsory cat registration

Cat owners in the Charters Towers Regional Council area will no longer be required to register their
pets after a Council decision to scrap mandatory cat registration.

This follows the repeal of State Government legislation last month that required cats to be registered.

Mayor Frank Beveridge said Council considers the registration of cats an unnecessary impost on animal owners.

"This was something that was forced upon us through State legislation," Cr Beveridge said.

"You can imagine what it's like trying to track down cats – herding cats – so we're quite happy that the legislation changed."

However Council will offer a voluntary registration of cats if pet owners wish to take advantage of the service.

"This will be free service that Council will offer," Cr Beveridge said.

"Cat owners will get a free tag for ID purposes. However under State legislation it remains mandatory that all cats and dogs are microchipped."

Cr Beveridge said Council continued to encourage cat owners to be responsible for their animals.

Council offers the following advice:

  • Desex your cat at an early age. Desexing will ensure male cats do not spray or fight.
  • Ensure your cat is kept contained to your property at all times.
  • Identify your cat with a collar and tag and have it microchipped.
  • Provide clean, fresh water at all times.
  • Cats that wander can cause nuisance to your neighbours by defecating in their gardens, spraying and fighting. A $100 on the spot fine applies to cats that are not contained to their own properties. Your cat may also be impounded.
  • Cats that wander are in danger of being injured or killed by a car, dog or another cat.
