Pedestrian Crossing – Gill Street

Works have commenced at the Gill Street pedestrian crossing, directly opposite McDonalds. Works are scheduled for completion by the end of June 2018.  

Council acknowledges that the works may cause inconvenience  and appreciates the public’s cooperation.

The next stage of the project will include two (2) more roundabouts. One (1) will be installed at the intersection of High Street & Gill Street, and another roundabout at the intersection of Church Street & Gill Street. Works are scheduled to commence mid October 2018, following tourist season.

 

PREVIOUS WORKS

Road surfacing works – Bow & Gill Streets

Pavement construction and road surfacing works on Bow Street (from Gill to Mary Streets) will commence Saturday 19 May, at noon, finishing 6:00am Sunday 20 May 2018.

Gill Street road surfacing works will continue between High and Church Streets on Sunday 20 May 2018 commencing at 5:00pm and the Vulture Street roundabout will commence Monday 21 May at 5:00pm.

These works will involve lane closures with detours in place.

Road Surfacing Works – Church Street

Pavement construction and road surfacing works on Church Street from Civic Lane to Anne Street will commence Saturday 12 May 2018 at 12:00 noon and will continue Sunday 13 May 2018.  Final surfacing works will be undertaken Monday night, 14 May 2018.

These works will involve both day and night works with lane closures and detours in place.

Vulture Street Roundabout and further road surfacing works

The Vulture Street roundabout pavement construction and road surfacing works have been delayed due to contractor material quality issues. Works will now commence Tuesday 17 April 2018.

The contractor will remain in Charters Towers to undertake further road surfacing works which consist of:

  • Bow Street from Bow Street Carpark to Mary Street on 19 & 20 April 2018;
  • Mary Street from rear of Zara Clark Museum to Mosman Street on 20 April 2018; and
  • Mid-section of Gill Street from Elders to Woolworths Petrol on 21 & 22 April 2018.

Gill Street Asphalt – Vulture Street to Enterprise Road & Boundary Street roundabout

Council contractors will commence laying asphalt at the Gill and Boundary Streets roundabout on Wednesday 6 December 2017 for a period of up to five days.  Lane closures with detours will be present.

Asphalt works between Vulture Street and Enterprise Road have been delayed until week commencing 11 December 2017 due to contractor scheduling delays. On commencement these works will involve night shifts to minimise disruptions.  Lane clsoures with detours will still be in place.

Pavement reconstruction at roundabout - Monday 6 November 2017

Council contractors will be undertaking profiling and placing bitumen treated base (BTB) at the Gill and Boundary Streets roundabout.  These works will commence Monday 6 November 2017 until Wednesday 8 November 2017.  The works will involve night shifts to minimise disruptions, however, lane closures with detours will still be present.  Following these works Council staff will then complete the remaining traffic islands.

Gill Street roundabout update - One lane closure

As works on the Gill and Boundary Streets roundabout progresses, the East bound lane of Gill Street (hospital side) will be closed from Wednesday 13 September 2017 for a period of 2 weeks.  Detours will be in place via Mary Street.  The section of Boundary Street between Gill and Mary Streets will also be closed to traffic (local traffic will have guided access).

Gill Street pavement reconstruction - Vulture Street to Enterprise Road

Council staff will be undertaking profiling and placing bitumen treated base (BTB) on Gill Street between Vulture Street and Enterprise Road.  These works are expected to commence Thursday 21 September.  The works will involve night works to minimise disruptions, motorists are to expect lane closures with detours.

Preliminary roundabout works and further reconstruction works commence in Gill Street

Council staff have commenced preliminary roundabout works at the Gill & Boundary Streets intersection.  Preparation for pavement replacement between Vulture & Enterprise Streets has also commenced with the removal of traffic islands.

Gill Street roundabout update August 2017

Council staff will be undertaking works at the Gill & Boundary Streets intersection to construct a roundabout.  These works will take approximately four weeks.  During these works there will be disruptions to traffic.  Detours will be in place via Hodgkinson Street and Mary Street (between Vulture and High Streets).   

These works are planned to commence late August.  In addition to these works, linemarking will also be completed during the month of August on the completed asphalt sections of Gill Street.

Gill Street Reconstruction Stage 1 April 2017

Gill Street Pavement Reconstruction 2017/2018

The following works are planned:

  1. Profile and place BTB Boundary Street intersection, construct roundabout, lay asphalt, July 2017
  2. Replace water main Church Street to High Street, August 2017
  3. Profile and place BTB High Street intersection, construct roundabout, lay asphalt, September 2017
  4. Profile and place bitumen treated base (BTB) Church Street – High Street excluding intersections, early October  2-3 days (night works)
  5. Replace garden bed kerbing,  mid to late October
  6. Lay asphalt Church – High Streets, early November
  7. The Church Street intersection and roundabout will be undertaken once service relocations are completed at this intersection.

During 2017/2018 various kerb and footpath replacements will also be undertaken. Council staff will liaise with individual residents and business owners to minimise disruptions.
