Go Slow! Asbestos it's a NO Go!

National Asbestos Awareness Month launched on 01 November with the campaign’s new message, “Renovating? Go Slow! Asbestos – It’s a NO GO!” reminding Australian’s about the dangers of asbestos.

1 in 3 Australian homes contain asbestos building materials. Homes built or renovated before 1987 are highly likely to contain asbestos products. Asbestos can be found under floor coverings, in walls, ceilings, and around hot water pipes, in brick, weatherboard, fibro and clad homes.

The risk to families is when asbestos building materials are disturbed or damaged and this can release dangerous dust and fibres that can be inhaled.

“We have many older homes in Charters Towers, many of which may contain Asbestos.” said Cr Mike Power. “People are putting themselves and their families at risk when they carry out renovations and don’t take the appropriate measures to control risks associated with asbestos.”

With Asbestos-related diseases continuing to increase, the importance of raising awareness is paramount.

Asbestos - it's a NO Go!During Asbestos Awareness Month, all Australians are invited to hold a Blue Lamington Drive at home, at work or at school to help raise awareness of the dangers of asbestos when renovating. This will also raise vital funds to support the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute.
