Gallery of Modern Art Brings a New Program to Charters Towers

A week of exciting hands-on activities for children will be available at the Excelsior Library from today until Friday. The Gallery of Modern Art’s “Kids on Tour” program, ‘ME, MYSELFIE AND I’ is designed to encourage children to explore ideas around self and identity.

QAGOMA Director Chris Saines CNZM said the program ‘Me, Myselfie and I’ encouraged children of all ages to explore ideas beyond their physical appearance and to think about how they express their emotions, personality, memories and experiences through images, sound, spoken word and movement.

“The activities have been developed by QAGOMA in collaboration with Australian and international artists featured in the Gallery’s Collection, including Angela Tiatia (New Zealand/Australia), Ayaz Jokhio (Pakistan), Wit Pimkanchanapong (Thailand), Miloš Tomić (Serbia) and Phil Dadson (New Zealand),” Mr Saines said.
Children may work through multiple activities including:
• drawing to create a composite portrait
• observing the transformation of faces through mirrors
• working with clothing to express themselves
• using sound and music to express mood and personality.
The Kids on Tour program coincides with the exhibition ‘Me, Myselfie and I’ at GOMA’s Children’s Art Centre in Brisbane and will visit a record number of regional venues across Queensland. The project is supported by Gina Fairfax through the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art Foundation.

“Libraries have become a place to engage and be hands-on. Programs such as the ‘Me Myselfie and I’ are great for children in regional areas to engage in activities they wouldn’t normally get to experience.” said Acting Mayor, Cr Sonia Bennetto.
